EV Road Trip Day 27
Relax Day at our hotel, the Hew & Draw, and silly discussions of moose and squirrel. Then two small birds were trying to get in our window for the better part of 4 hours, so we named them, Boris and Natasha. Natasha simply would not give up. Tomorrow, we venture forth to the Viking Trail at Gros Morne National Park and the Western Brook Pond Tour. Gros Morne, which translates to “large mountain standing alone,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the second largest national park in Atlantic Canada. There we will park and have an 2 km hike to Western Brook Pond, for a boat tour of “this freshwater fjord which was carved out by glaciers during the most recent ice age from 25,000 to about 10,000 years ago. Once the glaciers melted, the land, which had been pushed down by the weight of the ice sheet, rebounded and the outlet to the sea was cut off. The 9.9 mi long narrow ‘pond’ then filled in with fresh water. The water in the fjord is extremely pure and is assigned the highest purity rating available for natural bodies of water. Pissing Mare Falls, the highest waterfall in eastern North America and 199th highest in the world flows into Western Brook Pond.” Total trip including the round-trip drive, hike, and 2-hour tour is approximately 5 hours.
More about that tomorrow.
