6000 Mile EV Road Trip - Stay 3
Sorrel River Ranch, Moab, Utah • June 19 – 21, 2024

We arrived at Sorrel River Ranch Resort from Moab after Supercharging at the 150 kw Tesla Supercharger in the Best Western Plus Canyonlands (where we left a Tesla cache) and set off for an amazingly scenic drive along the Colorado River from US-191 on the Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Highway. The road borders Arches National Park on the South. The red rock country around Moab dwarfs that of Sedona, Arizona. It stretches from Canyonlands National Park to Arches and surrounds, with enormous cliffs. It is truly a sight to behold.
I first discovered Sorrel River Ranch Resort while researching a road trip in 2016 to pick up our son from a flight from the Colorado Outward Bound Camp at Grand Junction Regional Airport. My friend Stanton Perry and I drove up the DDPH to I-70 and stopped at Sorrel River Ranch for lunch on the way to Grand Junction and I thought, “I need to take my family here someday.” That day was last Thursday. (The kids will have to join us next time!)
The comfortable rooms, each with outdoor porch swings, are in single story ranch houses and the main lodge dining rooms and patios look out over the fast-moving Colorado River and red rock cliffs. There are several huge buttes towering near the property as well.
Sorrel River Ranch has 12 horses (including three pregnant mares, a mini-horse, and Dale the goat). They have horse programs for kids as well as adults and an enormous pasture that attracts deer as well. Suzanne and I opted for a 2-hour UTV ride (with me driving) along Onion Creek up into the red rocks of the canyon, which included a hideout purportedly used by Jesse James. As we (the leader was in his separate UTV and we in our Kawasaki) rambled along the trail, we blasted through many stream crossings throwing water everywhere, including into the vehicle. We had a great time! Cannot wait until these things are EVs!
Back at the ranch, we spent some time with ranch staff, one of whom was a young visiting South African chef from Florida brought in to cook for a group from McLaren (London) and Texas McLaren owners who were rallying across the West. There were 11 McLarens and a Bugatti. The chef arranged for the kitchen to prepare a delicious off-menu vegetarian entrée for our dinner that evening. We also enjoyed s’mores by the campfire next to the river. A perfect ending to our ranch experience.
